Knowing Jesus More
18/02/12 21:55
I read John 2 today and was struck by a revelation I have never had before. I don’t know about you but sometimes reading the gospels and the reality of life portrayed in them passes me by. Very significant events are covered with very few words; it’s almost cryptic in style. As I read the relationship between Jesus and his mother exploded inside of me.
Just look at the scripture:
John 2:1 “On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."”
I have never quite understood why Mary would put the responsibility on Jesus when it came to keeping the bridegroom from being embarrassed. What could He do anyway? She ignored his response and told the servants to do what he told them.
It dawned on me for the first time that when she stored up all the things said to her at his birth that she would have talked to Jesus as he grew up about them. She would have talked about the angel’s appearance to her, the conception without knowing a man, the words of Simeon and Anna, the dreams that lead Joseph to take them to Egypt, the manger, the shepherds and the visit of the wise men. All of it would have been discussed between them. She knew who He was and He knew what was coming. His message of the Kingdom and redemption were not just dropped into his heart when he turned 30. They would have talked and talked about what would happen. What His ministry would be like?
When it came to the miracle at the wedding, she knew who He was and what He could do. She was not shocked like the disciples when he did different things. (Mark 6: 49… They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.) If anything she was anxious to see him reveal himself and fulfill his destiny. He may not have thought it was his time but His mother knew this was the time.
